South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) in Tooting, has secured government approval to build two new mental health facilities at Springfield University Hospital.
The new facilities, part of the estate modernisation programme at Springfield, are set to open in 2022 and will include eight new inpatient wards, new housing and a 32-acre public park.
SWLSTG has signed contracts for the delivery of the Springfield University Hospital development with Springfield and Tolworth Estate Partnership (STEP), a 50/50 partnership between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima Partnerships.
Sir Robert McAlpine will be the main contractor for the mental health units.
Vanessa Ford, acting chief executive of SWLSTG, said: “The wards will revolutionise the way we deliver care for generations to come and ensure we can provide high-quality and safe services. The new facilities have been carefully designed alongside our clinicians and service users to provide the most supportive environment and innovative facilities for the delivery of mental healthcare.”
Harriet Gladwell-Phillips, general manager of STEP, commented: “We are delighted to be involved in the estate modernisation programme at Springfield. It’s a pioneering project for the NHS providing not only much needed high-quality mental health facilities, but also housing and new green spaces for southwest London.”
She added: “The whole area will benefit from the redevelopment of the site, which will bring together new and existing people who live and work at Springfield to create a community with mental health and well-being at its heart.”
